"Window on the World"

In this project, some aspects of Indian culture are presented to interested groups. The presentation is usually through the medium of dance, supplemented by photos, slides and artifacts, with explanations given orally and through written material.

The two groups that have beem commonly served by such presentations are schools and old-ages homes.

Apart from an interest in the art of Indian dance, these presentations have evoked discussions on a wide range of topics, including gods and godesses, forms of salutations, dot on the forehead (bindi), costumes, languages, festivals, etc.

The presentations usually last about an hour and, to-date, have always been very popular, as much with the young as with the old.

"On behalf of the students of the staff of the McGill Summer School for Gifted and Talented Students, I must thank you for the presentation your dancers made to the classes here.

It was beautifully and sensitively done. Our students were deeply impressed by what they saw and gained an understanding and respect for a tradition largely unknown to them.

I hope we can enlighten another group of students next year."

"The presentation concluded with a slide presentation depicting Indian dress and environment. The students really appreciated it mainly due to the fact that recently (sic) projects on 'International Day' as well as reading units on different countries including India were fresh on their minds.

These short presentations are well worthwhile, the reason being that, a greater understanding and appreciation of the many cultures in Montreal could be instilled and nurtured in our young citizens. We would welcome other programs similar to this one in our school."

"We truly enjoyed the wonderful dance performance your students presented and found the background information very informative.

We appreciate the time and careful researching of interesting facts for our students to learn about the Indian culture."

"I enjoyed watching you dance. I really want to learn to dance like you. The eye and head movement was really outrageous. The slides were nice. Your costume was gorgeous. I learned a lot about India and their (sic) cultural dances. I really want to visit India. It sound (sic) really fun and exciting. I'll never forget the hand signs we were taught. Please come again."

"I really enjoyed the dances they were very interesting especially the storys (sic) and having the people act them out. I also want to thank your students for coming and show us (sic) the dances. How long did it take you to teach your student (sic) to dance like that? Will you send your students to our school again?"

Jordan Hickdy
Student
"Your act was really fantastic. I couldn't take my eyes off the dancer because she was very good. I liked the way you taught us how to do the signs for the story. The slides really made me know more about the cultures of India. I think the play was the best."
