The overwhelming response of the press and public in India as well as
the personal initiative of Dr. Sunil Kothari, well-known dance scholar
and critic, have led to the establishment of a fellowship under which
a young trained dancer from India will come to Montreal to study Bharata
Natya technique and choreography at Kala Bharati dance school. The fellowship
has been named after Oneil De whose contribution to the promotion and
propagation of Indian Classical dance is immeasurable.
The first recipient of this fellowship is Suchitra Mitra. Suchitra has
studied dance since the age of six. She has a diploma in Bharata Natya
from Kalakshetra Madras, a Masters degree in Dance from Rabindra Bharati
University, Calcutta, where she is presently teaching in the dance department,
as also a diploma in Indian Classical Music. She has performed in various
cities in India, Asia and Europe. Kala Bharati is indeed privileged
to receive Suchitra as the first Oneil De Memorial Fellow.
A few professional artists have trained at Kala Bharati supported by
scholarships and grants from other governments or sources. Notable among
these is Suzy Manyri (Sulochana), a professional dancer from Martinique
who has trained in Bharata Natya during the period August 1988 to June
1989 on a scholarship from "Service Municipal d'Action Culturelle
de la Ville de Fort-de-France en Martinique" and the "Conseil
Régional de la Martinique". Since then, she has visited
Montreal several times to continue her training at Kala Bharati. Shauna
Beharry, a well-known performing artist from Western Canada received
a Saskatchewan Arts Board grant to study Bharata Natya at Kala Bharati
from Autumn 1990 to Fall Session 1991. The dancer-choreographer Roger
Sinha, originally from Ontario, has been training at Kala Bharati to
create a dance piece with elements of Indian dance in it.
Many of the activities at Kala Bharati are supported by donations from
students, their parents and well-wishers. For specific projects, Kala
Bharati has also received grants from the Canada Council, the Canadian
Federal Government, Quebec Provincial Government, The Indo-Canadian
Shastri Institute, Pratt & Whitney and Bell Canada.
The Indian Council of Cultural Relations has awarded travel grants to
guest speakers invited by Kala Bharati for its various conferences and
symposiums.
